    Families protecting a legacy

Transferring assets is a mechanical problem. Transferring them well is a family problem.

    What we usually find

    • Estate documents drafted years ago and never revisited after major life changes.
    • Beneficiary designations that contradict the will or trust.
    • A trust that exists on paper but was never funded.
    • An estate concentrated in illiquid assets with no plan for settlement costs.
    • Heirs who have never been told what the plan is or why it was designed that way.

    Equal is not always fair

When one child works in the family business and another does not, or when one asset is a home and another is a portfolio, dividing equally and dividing fairly are different outcomes. Deciding which one you intend, and explaining the reasoning during your lifetime, prevents most of the disputes that follow.
